S/M Sniper Art Collection

Japan's brilliant S/M Sniper magazine is now defunct, but the memory of the magazine lingers in these superb images from Sniper contributor Atsushi Akai.

This is but a sampling of the 100+ images assembled in this sublime book.

FANTOMAS JAPONAIS was published in 2014 by France's Le Lezard Noir.

Many of these images appeared in Sniper throughout its history as Sakai was a regular contributor.

I love his use of space, and how the setting often dominates the subject, giving it, in turn, stark relief, and even greater prominence in the mind's eye.

Text is in French, images are universal.

Female Teacher: In Front of the Students

What's to be said about Yasuro Uegaki's Female Teacher: In Front of the Students (just out from Impulse/Synapse) is all good. Very, very good, in fact.

Nikkatsu, the old Japanese film studio that, after sixty years, suddenly turned dark and erotic to make ends meet, has, admittedly, made its share of lame efforts such as Nympho Diver and I Like It From Behind, both recently released by Impulse/Synapse. I suppose some folks bought them, but, for mine, they have little appeal because they're doing nothing that hundreds of British and American softcore porn flicks haven't already done.

You can't say the same about Nikkatsu flicks like Assault - Jack The Ripper, Rape!, White Rose Campus - Then, Everybody Gets Raped, Sex Hunter - Wet Target, Sex Hunter (the Ikeda film), Secret Chronicle - She Beast Market, and Zoop Up - Rape Site. All of these feature exploitation elements that are very culture-specific, and do not shun the sticky mix of sexual violence and eroticism that many Western films are afraid of.  Although S/M is being mainstreamed (and reduced to blandly flavored vanilla) by works of dubious literary merit such as 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (a massive bestseller), its harsher, more incendiary essence has been shaved away.

Nothing is shaved away in Impulse/Synapse's Female Teacher: In Front of the Students, a truly subversive Nikkatsu flick that some would describe as "troubling" for its perspective on rape. To take its politics too seriously would be to misunderstand its intentions. It is, afterall, a skin flick for a skin flick audience, so it takes a fantasy often imagined by women to its natural end point. If you think it condones the view that a raped woman can be sexually charged by the resulting trauma, you're projecting too hard. This is fantasy Japan-style, not reality.

The pretty Rushia Santo is 'Reiko', a new teacher at an elite high school. Forced to discipline a group of spoilt brats led by the particularly nasty Takuya (Toru Nakane), she finds herself intimidated by the boy. After an unnerving exchange with the group, Reiko is raped in one of the school's showers. Humiliated, she doesn't report the rape, but she keeps a piece of a jigsaw puzzle dropped at the scene by the masked rapist. Over the next few days, she attempts to identify her attacker, and flashes back to key images of the rape, but  her search is sidelined by a series of highly erotic seductions that relight the fire of the incident.

Like Toshiharu Ikeda's little-seen Sex Hunter (not be confused with Sex Hunter - Wet Target) and the notorious Captured For Sex 2, Female Teacher: In Front of the Students exudes an atmosphere of sexual nihilism and abandon that is downright intoxicating. Director Uegaki demonstrates a superb eye and flair for dark eroticism, and creates a seventy minute masterpiece that sucks us into a sexual maelstrom while never ignoring the story's emotional journey. Santo is excellent as a woman on an odyssey of deep exploration, and delivers a strong emotional, physical, and intensely sexual performance as a teacher torn between tradition and the delicious call of the dark.

The film has an amazing look. It's gritty and beautiful all at once, and the compositions, subtle camera moves, and extreme close-ups are striking. The sex runs the gamut from hetero to lesbian, and there is a potent threeway worked into the mix. The narrative never flags, and the sense of anxiety experienced by Reiko is always felt by the audience.

A great selection from Impulse/Synapse, and, hopefully, a sign of the direction future releases will take. Films like this offer a rare and exotic glimpse into the human mind, and underline why nobody does it better than the Japanese.

Don't Kow-Tow To The Noise

Two years in the making, my film Pond Scum nears completion.

Truly a collaborative effort, it has grown and morphed and mutated like a living organism into something that is, strangely enough, about the nature of creativity.

What I like most about filmmaking is the evolution of each project, and how the subject matter brings the like-minded together.

Frankly, I make films based on what fires me up. I make films with budgets and without budgets. There is always a way. That's what being creative is. Finding a way. Finding your own way. And ignoring the noise of negativity, envy, those projecting their own insecurities onto you, and those kow-towing to convention.

I have no illusions about Pond Scum's fate beyond completion.

It is dedicated to cinema's great revolutionary, Koji Wakamatsu, who may spin in his grave when he sees it. Who knows!?

Captive Women of Pulpy Porn

They were a product of the good old days when the good old days meant there was a big difference between fantasy and reality. Now, because of ambitious DA's and politicians, the lines have been deliberately blurred.

There's still a yawning chasm between the real and the imagined, but you wouldn't know it.

On-line porn favors some of the scenarios here, but most of it is cheap and shabby and lacking imagination.

Hopefully, text-based pornography will endure in digital form if not on paper, even though these very fine examples of the genre scream for a revival.

The fellow on the left looks decidedly ape-like, and the rural setting would not have been out of place in Craven's Last House on the Left. Surely a role for the late David Hess?

Enthusiastic biker does his thing as the victim's husband (?) considers the ramifications of abandoning his drink in favor of rescue.

The figure behind him (a black man?) appears relatively unconcerned and marginally disfigured.

It made most middle class readers comfortable to think that, on the w(hole) sex criminals were deformed tragics and uneducated hicks. A young Ted Bundy may have had a different opinion.

The cameraman is a terrific touch here, his activities pre-dating an era (now) where filming the sex act has become extremely common. He's using one of those great old cameras with the rotating lenses. A good choice for illicit porno making, my friend!

The use of the long phallus seems very matter-of-fact with the male showing little emotion.

Another photographic opportunity pre-internet with wide distribution doubtful... lucky for the lady perhaps?

These days, one photograph is forever.

Back then, most photos ended up in someone's locked desk drawer or buried between pages in a nondescript book, far from the wife's prying eyes.

Another reason the 70's may have been the good old days for some.

The Captive Women Series stretched (excuse the pun) to hundreds and hundreds of titles and were a bargain at $2.50 apiece. Now, many sell for over $100.

The Dawn of Real Cannibalism

As far as I know, close to the first porn flick to feature actual flesh eating. From Japan, of course.

In the 70's, German fetish series such as Pain, Violence, and Slave Sex covered most of the ground depicted on this video sleeve including the nailing of body parts to tables, extreme piercing, and genital suspension.

These Euro films did not, however, cover initialing the body with knives and needles, and they did not feature a scene in which a piece of the body is removed with a knife and eaten for real.

Truly a film for a narrow, specific market.

Produced by Dragon Image.

I haven't seen the film myself, but verification of its content comes from a totally credible source.

More Seen and Unseen deMullotto

Courtesy of a close friend of Mr. deMullotto comes this selection of seen and unseen work.

In the past, some have complained that the CGI pieces are primitive and unconvincing. Please understand that Mr. deMullotto was one of the very first practitioners of the art to attempt 3-D graphics of this nature. To criticize these for their technical crudity is akin to unfavorably comparing the first black and white TV's to the plasmas of today. The plasmas are impressive, but the real magic of the form was in its invention.

Some of these examples of the artist's work have appeared previously in books and on his defunct website.

He remains an unsung master of the form alongside Robert Bishop, John Willie, Eric Stanton, and Tom of Finland.

I have more of these, and will post them within the next two weeks.
