Marilyn Chambers, who was found dead yesterday by her daughter, was a porn actress who really could act.She's not the only one, of course, but she's one of the few who've worked with great directors -- directors such as David Cronenberg.
She was a revelation as the plague-infected Rose in Cronenberg's Rabid ('77).
Chambers made dozens of porn films such as the Mitchell Brothers' surreal and infamous Behind The Green Door ('72), but her best were Resurrection of Eve ('73) and Up 'n' Coming ('83).
She worked with John Holmes (taking all of him on a pool table) in the 1980 Insatiable. Not a great film, it was her most well known after Behind the Green Door. It was released worldwide in hardcore and soft versions.
She also starred as a detective in the cable TV favorite Angel of H.E.A.T. ('83)
In '99, a third Insatiable film, Still Insatiable, featured Chambers. It was a shoddy effort by director Veronica Hart, but Chambers, at 47 years of age, put most of the younger gals to shame with her energetic, sensual performance.
Chambers was married for ten years to Chuck Traynor, the ex-husband/manager of another dead porn legend, Linda Lovelace. In the book Ordeal, the born-again Lovelace accused Traynor of beating her and forcing her to make porn movies.Chambers admitted battling with alcohol and drugs over the years, and is noteworthy for being one of the the first X-rated actresses to shave her moneymaker.
I admired Miss Chambers because, unlike most people, she "owned" what she did, had class, and leveled no blame for her choices.
